OPENING THE SKY
Created for the Bateekha Project, this composition brings together a fragmented geometric star opening to release a flock of doves, while the Palestinian keffiyeh emerges from within its structure. The work offers a reflection on peace, freedom, cultural memory and coexistence. The opening star suggests rupture and transformation, while the doves evoke a universal desire for harmony. The keffiyeh brings a sense of identity, belonging and resilience to the composition.
Entirely handcrafted in Historic Cairo by master tentmaker Tarek El Safty, the piece uses the traditional khayamiya appliqué technique. A contemporary narrative meets a living craft tradition, celebrating the importance of transmission, craftsmanship, dialogue and hope.
The Bateekha Project is a charitable initiative supporting the Palestinian cause through art and fundraising, including support for Healing for Gaza, which provides psychological care for children and families affected by the war in Gaza.
