RESTITUTIONS

This project consists of four textile panels, each panel is meticulously appliquéd and embroidered by hand on traditionally woven cotton produced in Benin. Inspired by the royal palace doors of Abomey, taken by the French army in 1892, these works pay tribute to the Kingdom of Danhomey’s cultural heritage.
The first panel portrays King Béhanzin standing in defiance against colonial forces, surrounded by scenes of violence and the Amazons defending their land. The second panel illustrates the toppling of General Alfred Dodds’ statue, symbolizing resistance. The third panel depicts the deposition of General Sir Harry Rawson, reflecting the ongoing demand for reparations. The final panel celebrates the restitution of the Abomey treasures, symbolizing justice and healing.
This project has not only shed light on these powerful narratives but also enabled the Yedmadjé collective to fund construction works at their ateliers. I’m deeply grateful for their trust, dedication, and craftsmanship. I look forward to continuing this journey, pushing creative conversations, amplifying their remarkable skills, and celebrating Beninese heritage.
